Every apple seed produces a unique variety and the best way to reproduce an existing variety is to vegitively propagate it by grafting or budding.
This practical two hour workshop will teach you how to graft fruit trees for your own backyard or orchard. By the end of the workshop you will have the knowledge to; top work new varieties or strains of fruit onto established trees, repair bark damaged trees, and produce a tree ready to plant out as a maiden the following winter.
The workshop will cover:
The basic techniques of grafting
How to successfully collect and store bud wood
Rootstock selection
After care of your grafted trees.
Equipment supplied
There will be a practical demonstration of the most common grafting techniques
after which you will practice using waste prunings. Finally you will get the opportunity to accomplish two whip and tongue grafts that you can take home to raise into maiden trees.
MM106 and MM111 apple rootstock will be provided and a wide range of apple scions will be available from local trees.
If you know of a particular apple tree that you would like to reproduce we will instruct you on cutting your own scion wood to bring along.
