Wassail
Sully's Cider Wassail at the Old Cheese Factory 1st Sept 2019
Each year on the first Sunday of September we hold our orchard wassail. In an afternoon of mumbo jumbo and hullabaloo we toast the cider gods, chase off evil spirits, and wake up the apple trees to ensure a good harvest.
Pagan chants and exorcism of spirits is all part of a fun day of celebration centered on the toasting of the humble apple tree to encourage a plentiful harvest in the autumn.
Our celebrations include performances by the Braidwood Cantors and the Surley Griffin Morris. Hearty warming foodand Cider For Toasting, cold and mulled.
The afternoon comes to a climax when everyone is encouraged to gather, musical instruments, loud voices and any other noise making apparatus they can get their hands on to make an almighty din to scare away the evil spirits and wake up the apple trees. The end is signaled by the firing of a gun over the apple tree.
